LG Prada Is Apple iPhone Killer?

One clear indicator of the fact the iPhone is going to do very well is the fact that Apple’s rivals are already starting to push ‘iPhone killers.’ Much like in the case of the iPod, which five years later and countless devices down the line has not been bested, these iPhone killers are nothing of the sort. The LG Prada is considered an iPone killer, mainly because it also features a full side touch sensitive display, but the similarities are only skin deep.

Reviews comparing the two products, such as the recent one written by Brian Lam for Gizmodo, finds the iPhone competitor sub par. Not only is the touch screen interface not used to its full potential, but the menu system is not made to take advantage of it, being very similar to those on the other high end LG phones. Furthermore, the Prada’s sync is rudimentary, only allowing you to transfer contacts and calendar appointments, and it lacks many of the useful features of the iPhone such as coverflow, weather and stocks widgets, as well as iTunes integration. Even in terms of internal memory and screen size, the iPhone is the clear winner, although it is slightly larger.

Like the iPod, when it first came out, the price of the iPhone is the most common complaint about it, and the main reason people are not adding it to their shopping lists. Amusingly enough, the LG Prada actually costs more than the iPhone, and significantly so. But even if the Prada shaved off nearly a quarter of its price to cost as much as the 8GB iPhone, it wouldn’t matter, because the iPhone is simply a better device.

If the old iPod killers were any indication, the new iPhone killers will crash and burn, simply because they cannot compete with the iPhone as a whole, not only in terms of features, but also in terms of user experience.

The 20-inch 3D display from Philips

Looks like the age of 3D displays is not as far as previously thought, as there are quite a few companies actively involved in the development of 3D-capable screens, which will bring the users a bit closer to what's going on in the images they're watching. And one such company is Philips, who has just announced at Infocomm 2007 its new 20-inch 3D display, a device aimed at professionals and ordinary users alike.

Thus, according to the company's statement, this device represents the latest addition to its 3D WOWvx professional display

range and its main selling point is the fact that it can deliver a very vivid 3D experience without the need for special glasses. The device comes in two different versions, namely a frame-mount display that provides images with a 4:3 aspect ratio, being designed for integration in shop interiors or kiosks; as well as a desktop version with bezel and stand, for those users who want to enjoy 3D images in their own homes.

As Philips informs us, the purpose of WOWvx technology is mainly related to advertising. Thus, it seems that 3D imaging is a valuable tool in raising brand or product awareness, as 3D images will hold the consumer's attention far longer than ordinary print images do. This is the reason why these things might prove to be quite popular for use in digital signage, point-of-sale advertising, games and 3D visualization.

Although the company doesn't give us any specific technical information related to the new displays, it's quite possible that they share the most common features of another device that uses the WOWvx technology, the 42-3D6C01, namely an autostereoscopic 9-view display system with a brightness level of 500 cd/square meter and a contrast ratio of 1500:1.

The company has not released any pricing information regarding their 20-inch 3D displays, but it seems that they'll be sold through Philips 3D Solutions distribution partners from August 2007 onwards, and we'll come back with more details at that time.

Chevrolet Optra Magnum TCDi diesel launched!

Chevy Optra Magnum diesel

Chevrolet Optra Magnum, the diesel variant of Chevrolet Optra was launched on Saturday. The Optra Magnum comes in three variants - and is priced in the range of Rs 8.74 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh. The Optra Magnum has a 2-litre turbocharged common rail direct injection diesel engine (TCDi, GM calls it). Genereal Motors believes the Optra Magnum's price will make it attractive to customers. The car delivers 120 bhp of max power.

Interiors

The Chevrolet Optra Magnum has leather wrapped around its steering wheel, seats and gear knob. The colours are two-tone beige. It has all new 2 DIN CD MP3 and cassette player, and 360- degree air vents for surround cooling effect.

The tilt steering and additional lumbar support add to the car's comfort. Even back seats come with a 60:40 split for optimum use of space. There are well-thought additions like a mobile phone holder. The NVH has also been improved in the Chevrolet Optra Magnum diesel for the best drive.

Exteriors

The car has almond shaped head lamps, borrowed from the Chevrolet-SRV hatch-back, which really makes the Chevrolet Optra Magnum stand out from the rest of the pack. The new chrome alloy wheels and special chrome plated door handles are standard in the Optra Magnum. And then there is that loud grille, all chrome and loud and definitely aggressive. The aggresive forward posture of the Chevrolet Optra Magnum complements its aerodynamic design.

Safety

ABS system with XPRO protection ensures prompt braking. Impact-proof bumper and dual air bags add to the Optra Magnum's safety.

The Chevrolet Optra Magnum comes in three variants: 2.0 MAX TCDi, 2.0 LS TCDi and 2.0 LT TCDi. There is no automatic transmission yet. Power windows, power steering, central locking, rear window defogger and cooled glove box are standard across all Magnums.

According to GM India president and MD Rajeev Chaba, the Chevrolet Optra Magnum diesel has been launched in India after introducing the diesel model in Europe and Korea.

With the Magnum, GM plans to take the more expensive Skoda Octavia in the luxury segment. Till now, GM India has just one diesel model - the Tavera. The company believes there is more demand in the demand in the diesel car market; Skoda Octavia has ruled the high-end diesel car market in India since launch; the Chevrolet Optra Magnum wants to dethrone the Indian diesel leader. The Magnum is its GM's first attempt to tap India's luxury disel car market.

The Chevrolet Optra Magnum is GM's second car launch this year. A couple of months back, it launched the Chevrolet Spark, the reborn Daewoo Matiz. Matiz vanished with the collapse of Daewoo Motor. GM, which took over Daewoo has relaunched the Matiz in India as Chevrolet Spark after a log gap.

According to Anisha Motwani, director (marketing), GM India, the company has been able to achieve robust growth even as the industry is undergoing a slowdown. This year GM is aiming to sell 66,000 units as compared to 38,800 last year. A lot of these sales wil come from the small car Spark.

iPod Tower of Sound: The iTower Omega

iTower Omega

We’ve seen designs like this before but none quite so slim (5” wide). Keep in mind that it’s from the makers of the questionable Ionic Breezes, but that doesn’t mean every tower of power they put out is shite. The iTower Omega features 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers and 1 universal iPod dock perched on its head. No remote, so naturally I am disappointed.

Microsoft Surface ~ multi-touch interface table unveiled

Microsoft has unveiled Surface, a high-tech, touch-sensitive, table that allows users to interact with computers without keyboards and mice.

Microsoft Surface interface picture

On May 30, Microsoft unveiled a high-tech table called Microsoft Surface. In the past few years, there has been sporadic interest in surface and gestural interface computing systems and some prototypes did surface. There have also been wow demonstrations that never took off, for lack of the kind of resources needed to push the technology.

Microsoft, which has the requisite musclepower, is talking mass with its multi-touch table, Surface, a 30-inch acrylic horizontal display placed on a table, which allows users to interact with computers using touch, gestures, and objects with optical tags, such as cellphones and digital cameras with Wi-Fi, and Microsoft's Zune. Surface can also read bar codes in room keys and credit cards.

Microsoft Surface interface pictureMicrosoft Surface, started as Project Milan, some five years ago. Starting with a small team, that grew to nearly 100, the project has been very hush-hush.

The Surface runs on a Vista PC, DLP projectors, and cameras placed in its underbelly. Does not sound very different from touchscreens in ATMs and stores? Actually, it may be, if Surface does manage to deliver all that it promises, at affordable prices. If we go by Microsoft's claims, the uses of the Surface are pretty interesting. Firstly, the Surface allows 52 touches at one time, which means large groups can manipulate the Surface at the same time. So, if you want to fiddle with pictures in a group, you can transfer pictures from your digital camera by just placing the camera on the Surface. You can then rotate, crop or resize the pictures.

You can paint using a paintbrush or use virtual paint cups. You can organise your music, browse the net, and buy movie tickets. At restaurants, you can decide the menu, make reservations, and even tot up personalized bills for each person present at the table.

Then, there will be community games, that many people will be able to play at one shot.

Another interesting feature. The Surface will completely steer clear of the usual Windows interface. So, there will be no Start menu, none of the files, folders, and icons that you would normally see on a desktop.

OK, so you can't do all that right now. For one, the Surface will cost an arm and a leg, at $10,000. (Seems a lot for a table on aWindows Vista PC with a projector and cameras, but then it is a nascent technology and the high prices are to be expected.)

Then, Microsoft plans to roll out the Surface in November 2007, only in hotels, restaurants, stores, and casinos starting with launch partners T-Mobile stores, Starwood hotels, and Harrah's Entertainment.

At T-Mobile stores, customers will be able to see details of cell-phone models and tariff plans by simply placing the phones on the Microsoft Surface display. They will be able to buy ringtones, change tariff plans, and configure required services.

Harrah's Entertainment will roll out the MS Surface at Caesars Palace and Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas. Here, customers will be given reward cards that link to their Total Rewards customer VIP program, using which they will be able to get discounts when making hotel reservations.

At Caesars place, using the Microsoft Surface, customers will be able to view interactive maps of the hotel, check the waiting list of restaurants, see ticketing information and videos of concerts and even book concert tickets.

As far as the consumer market is concerned for whom the prices are way too high, Microsoft does expect Surface prices to dip over the next few years.

A USA Today report quotes Bill Gates as saying, "We're starting at the high end, sort of like you'd think about big flat-screen displays or even the initial personal computer. But there are ways that the hardware cost of this will come down very dramatically."

To ensure that Surface catches on, Microsoft will give out Software Developer Kits (SDKs) to third-party developers and allow Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to build the Surface and brand it.

According to tech analysts, the Surface can reach the homes of the average customer, only if Microsoft is able to utilize its full ecosystem of developers to ensure that the Surface works seamlessly. Which would mean plugging a lot of money and effort into an initiative that will not add to Microsoft's bottomline, at least in the first few years.

While a few of Microsoft's high-tech initiatives bombed post-launch (think Zune and UMPCs), analyst reviews are largely positive about this one. Initial reports say that most analysts are pretty kicked about the Surface and consider it a real breakthrough in recent times.

It's been a long time since Microsoft has come out with a technology that can be described as cool (barring the Xbox 360, of course.) It will be interesting to see what Apple and Google have to say to that. Apple may have a lot to say as its highly anticipated iPhone that will debut soon, also boasts of a multi-touch interface. And while, Microsoft's Surface promises to bridge the gap between the digital world and the physical world in the long-term, iPhone customers will be able to do it much sooner.
