Research firm Gartnerissued a “How to Plan for User Interest in the Apple iPhone” research note today that despite its arguably welcoming title, expressly recommends that enterprise IT not consider buying iPhones at this time.
Analyst and report co-author Ken Delaney writes that “general requests to support iPhone should not be fulfilled on the basis that the device cannot be fully secured and managed” to levels Gartner has described for smart phones.
“IT organizations should refuse to support the iPhone at this time,” the research note points out. And then comes this zinger:
“If for political reasons this is not an option, then the iPhone should be placed under the concierge support level … meaning that support will be granted as an exception, with the associated costs for support covered by a monthly billing to pay for the dedicated support staff uniquely trained for this device.”
The note also quantifies the iPhone total cost of ownership as twice that of a BlackBerry or Palm Treo.
Several specific negatives to iPhone adoption in the enterprise are listed in the Gartner report. These include:
Apple’s “rudimentary” experience designing mobile devices specifically for the enterprise;
Lack of support from mobile management and mobile security software utilities;
Lack of compatibility with major business e-mail systems;
An operating system not licensed to third-party hardware suppliers, resulting in no backup;
No removable battery, creating the potential for increased support costs;
Only one carrier operator (AT&T Wireless);
The high price point, $499 for 4GB or $599 for 8GB.
I know that some of you are undecided about whether you will order an iPhone. In this post, I will state 11 reasons why you shouldn’t buy one.
You may already have identified the high price, ($499-$599) as a good reason against doing so. Or, you may be on another carrier’s plan and don’t want to pay the um, substantial penalty for early withdrawal just to sign a two-year with iPhone’s exclusive carrier AT&T Wireless.
But after riffing through New York Times’ tech reviewer David Pogue’s terrific Often Asked iPhone Questions piece this morning, I’ve identified 11 more reasons you shouldn’t buy an iPhone.
Ready for a dose of tech-flavored conscience?
While iPhone will work with any SIM card from exclusive iPhone carrier AT&T Wireless No other carrier’s SIM phone will work with iPhone.
If you are wearing gloves, the iPhone’s virtual keypad won’t work. That’s a concern for wintertime phone calls in cold areas.
No memos.
No voice dialing.
No voice recording.
No games.
No capacity for video output to a tv (as iPod has).
No capacity for over-the-air calendar appointments.
No capacity for over-the-air software updates.
No IM. Gotta use text messaging.
No flash or zoom in the camera.
Can you think of more reasons not to buy an iPhone? Comment and let us know!
Chevrolet Optra Magnum, the diesel variant of Chevrolet Optra was launched on Saturday. The Optra Magnum comes in three variants - and is priced in the range of Rs 8.74 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh. The Optra Magnum has a 2-litre turbocharged common rail direct injection diesel engine (TCDi, GM calls it). Genereal Motors believes the Optra Magnum's price will make it attractive to customers. The car delivers 120 bhp of max power.
Interiors
The Chevrolet Optra Magnum has leather wrapped around its steering wheel, seats and gear knob. The colours are two-tone beige. It has all new 2 DIN CD MP3 and cassette player, and 360- degree air vents for surround cooling effect.
The tilt steering and additional lumbar support add to the car's comfort. Even back seats come with a 60:40 split for optimum use of space. There are well-thought additions like a mobile phone holder. The NVH has also been improved in the Chevrolet Optra Magnum diesel for the best drive.
Exteriors
The car has almond shaped head lamps, borrowed from the Chevrolet-SRV hatch-back, which really makes the Chevrolet Optra Magnum stand out from the rest of the pack. The new chrome alloy wheels and special chrome plated door handles are standard in the Optra Magnum. And then there is that loud grille, all chrome and loud and definitely aggressive. The aggresive forward posture of the Chevrolet Optra Magnum complements its aerodynamic design.
Safety
ABS system with XPRO protection ensures prompt braking. Impact-proof bumper and dual air bags add to the Optra Magnum's safety.
The Chevrolet Optra Magnum comes in three variants: 2.0 MAX TCDi, 2.0 LS TCDi and 2.0 LT TCDi. There is no automatic transmission yet. Power windows, power steering, central locking, rear window defogger and cooled glove box are standard across all Magnums.
According to GM India president and MD Rajeev Chaba, the Chevrolet Optra Magnum diesel has been launched in India after introducing the diesel model in Europe and Korea.
With the Magnum, GM plans to take the more expensive Skoda Octavia in the luxury segment. Till now, GM India has just one diesel model - the Tavera. The company believes there is more demand in the demand in the diesel car market; Skoda Octavia has ruled the high-end diesel car market in India since launch; the Chevrolet Optra Magnum wants to dethrone the Indian diesel leader. The Magnum is its GM's first attempt to tap India's luxury disel car market.
The Chevrolet Optra Magnum is GM's second car launch this year. A couple of months back, it launched the Chevrolet Spark, the reborn Daewoo Matiz. Matiz vanished with the collapse of Daewoo Motor. GM, which took over Daewoo has relaunched the Matiz in India as Chevrolet Spark after a log gap.
According to Anisha Motwani, director (marketing), GM India, the company has been able to achieve robust growth even as the industry is undergoing a slowdown. This year GM is aiming to sell 66,000 units as compared to 38,800 last year. A lot of these sales wil come from the small car Spark.
We’ve seen designs like this before but none quite so slim (5” wide). Keep in mind that it’s from the makers of the questionable Ionic Breezes, but that doesn’t mean every tower of power they put out is shite. The iTower Omega features 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers and 1 universal iPod dock perched on its head. No remote, so naturally I am disappointed.
